Shen Yun Performing Arts is a U.S.-based dance company spearheaded by Chinese expatriates who are members of the Falun Gong new religion movement. The non-profit entertainment company showcases classical Chinese dances and tells stories of legends, folklore, historical characters, and dynasties. Many of these stories have been lost since the Chinese Communist Party occupied China. Today, Shen Yun presents a once-lost culture through the art of dance. Shen Yun Performing Arts were founded in 2006. The company employs 40 highly-trained male and female dancers who specialize in various techniques. Classical Chinese dances consist of tumbling techniques, postures, leaps, and flips. Most experienced Chinese dancers are adept in these skills. Moreover, the choreographies often include martial arts and gymnastic moves. For thousands of years, Chinese dancers have also incorporated gravity-defying dance moves.
