The Shen Yun Performing Arts are one of the rising entertainment companies in this decade. Unlike others that showcase contemporary dances or circus shows, the dance company presents a world-class display of ancient Chinese dance.
In 2006, it was formed and became one of the top classical Chinese dance companies. It is under the Falun Gong new religious movement, which aims to reinvigorate the grace and prowess of ancient Chinese culture. From having 90 performers in 2007, the company started growing. An orchestra was already a part of the company by 2009. Nowadays, it has broadened its reach through the simultaneous touring of seven companies.
Chinese historical and legendary stories are depicted in the dances. These include "Mulan," "Journey to the West," and "Outlaws of the Marsh." There are also performances based on Falun Gong stories. In the performances, classical Chinese Dance's three core elements are utilized, which are "bearing (emotion, cultural and ethnic flavor), form (expressive movements and postures), and technical skill (physical techniques of jumping, flipping, and leaping)."
Many Chinese percussions, such as the pipa, suona, dizi, and guzheng, are used to complete the performances. Meanwhile, the orchestra directs the melodies. Chinese instruments are also showcased in solo performances.
