With its first show premiering on Broadway in the early seventies, Company: A Musical Comedy is one of history’s first popular concept musicals. Catch the musical’s revival at the Buell Theatre from May 22nd to June 2nd next year!
The original story of Company follows Bobby, a single man surrounded by married people on the eve of his 35th birthday. Meanwhile, this revival brings a new perspective to the classic musical by introducing a fresh twist to the traditional tale, creatively transforming the main character into a female protagonist. In this new Company revival, Bobbie, the lead character, battles the demands of being unmarried and an older woman. In the presence of her married friends, she must choose between getting married, having a child, and embracing her freedom.
In contrast to the standard masculine image of Bobby, Bobbie is shown as a sharp, flirtatious, and lovable character who is already her own person when we meet her. She is constantly caught between the need for company and the worry of becoming stuck in such stereotyped roles. Throughout the show, her boyfriends critique her decisions, her pals frequently dispute, and her fears of household duties haunt her in her sleep. Watch her navigate the world of the 21st century and find genuine connections in a truly crazy generation!
Behind the scenes, three-time Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott, best known for her work on Angels in America and War Horse, will lead this new production of the ground-breaking musical comedy.
Elliot shares her experience working closely with Sondheim on this special revival before the legendary composer and lyricist died nearly two years ago. She remembers him arriving at the rehearsal room and beginning to cry as he observed the cast singing the track Company inside a small box. Sondheim continues to explain that this is exactly what he had initially imagined as he wrote the original script – claustrophobic, her friends in the back, with everyone storming into the room and squeezing her in there.

Notable celebrities who have performed in the show include some of the top actors and actresses on Broadway, such as Neil Patrick Harris, Elaine Stritch, Stephen Colbert, Christina Hendricks, and Jane Krakowski. At the moment, the official website has only announced Britney Coleman as the lead role of Bobbie, while the rest of the cast is yet to be revealed. Despite the lack of a conventional storyline, the performance garnered instant success as it was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards while winning six of them. Most Sondheim fans will recognize the show’s hits like “Being Alive,” “Not Getting Married Today,” and “The Ladies Who Lunch,” which have become standards in the musical theatre industry.
More than fifty years later, the Broadway Revival of Company continues to snatch awards, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical and the honorable Best Revival of a Musical. In addition, other awards include Patty Lupone’s Best Performance by a Featured Actress and Matt Doyle’s Best Performance by a Featured Actor, as well as the overall Best Scenic Design of a Musical.
